Hello Chapter Members and Prospective Members!

Spring has finally arrived, and with it several behind the scenes activities and year end activities are starting to bloom.  It is with great pleasure that we bring you up to date with your Chapter's recent activities.

Our recent member-facing events, a sold-out mortgage fraud training and Chapter social, were both well attended.  The attendees at our mortgage fraud program demonstrated the emotion that still holds strong, more than two years following an epic economic collapse.  We are fortunate in our ability to attract speakers who are both knowledgeable and dedicated to their profession, and thankful for their continued participation.  Our May 12 program will explore the issues surrounding another much debated, often controversial topic: who, exactly, is responsible to manage fraud risk within an organization?  Can it be legislated or regulated?  We are confirming final details and expect to open registration shortly.

Watch your email in the coming week for several announcements - not only for May 12 registration, but also for a special (member only) vote on proposed changes to our by-laws.  These changes are necessary for our continued compliance with ACFE's updated Chapter requirements, and also incorporate several proposed changes to our infrastructure.  The changes also include formal recognition of several new subcommittees.  The new committees are: Anti-Money Laundering, Law Enforcement Working Group, Mentoring, Media Relations and Speakers' Bureau and Scholarship.

Planning has already started for our year end meeting, which will be held as part of our June 27-28 training event.  This event is special for many reasons.  This is the first-ever two day training program at the Chapter level, and it is being developed in collaboration with ACAMS.  We also have commitments from two past presidents (subject to override by emergent events) - Jerry Rainwaters will conduct our 2 hour Ethics training, and GA Smith will lead the discussion on current Bank Secrecy Act issues.  We will also be soliciting nominations for Fraud Examiner of the Year (Metro-DC), so start thinking about colleagues you wish to nominate so that we can present a worthy Chapter member with the award at the meeting.

Chaper members who are current or prior law enforcement professionals are being offered an opportunity to participate in a local-level working group.  You may have received an e-mail about this.  If not, and you are interested, please contact Outreach co-chair Chuck Anderson  at  Chuck.Anderson@ACFEDC.ORG.

We have a list of those who previously indicated an interest in volunteering time to support the Chapter.  If you are interested in getting involved, but haven't yet reached out, please contact Secretary Ghaz Shah, Ghaz.Shah@ACFEDC.ORG, or me (Cheryl.Hyder@ACFEDC.ORG) and let us know your area of interest.  We anticipate supporting the Chapter's efforts and the new committees with additional volunteers.

The group purchase opportunity for the ACFE's redesigned CFE prep course is still available, and may be accessed at:

Register for Extended - ACFE DC Group Purchase of ACFE's Self Study Preparation Course (#2c) on Eventbrite  .

As long as there remains an interest, we will continue to offer this opportunity for Chapter members.

We would be remiss if we didn't offer congratulations to students at American University and Howard University for taking the initiative to form student chapters of ACFE-DC.  We look forward to your continued developing interest in the anti-fraud mission.  (Students, don't forget about the ACFE's annual scholarship .. follow up with us in October).

Thank you as always for your support and participation in our Chapter events.  We look forward to seeing you around!

With warm regards,

Cheryl Hyder, Greg Paige, Dave Karakashian, Ghaz Shah - your officers

Hello Chapter Members and Prospective Members!

We are excited to bring you current with chapter events and news.

Our speakers for the March 17 training event will be discussing the role mortgage fraud played and continues to play in the current economic crisis.  Our speakers have participated in the Federal inquiries into the cause of the collapse, provided Congressional testimony on the lending inquiry and current provide investigative and oversight efforts.

We are working on a date for an April networking social in addition to possible collaboration with other like minded organizations for trainings and other events.

Thank you for your participation in our membership survey.  The results show your overall satisfaction with our efforts, and also indicated individual interests in mentoring less experienced Chapter members, being mentored, and participating in speaking and media relations bureaus.  We are going to reach out to those who have indicated interest in these activities, shortly.

We are putting together a group purchase for the ACFE's national conference in June.  The actual conference pricing will depend on the number of enrollees; if you are interested in participating, please email Ghaz.Shah@acfedc.org for more information.  Our Chapter Secretary will provide you with the details you'll need to participate in this opportunity.

We are going to re-open the group purchase opportunity for the ACFE's
redesigned CFE prep course shortly.  Watch your emails for an announcement when this opportunity opens for the link to register.

Thank you as always for your support and participation in our Chapter events.  We look forward to seeing you in March!

With warm regards,

Hello Chapter Members and Prospective Members,

As one year draws to a close and another gets ready to greet us, we are frequently reminded of and presented with opportunities to help those less fortunate than ourselves.  I'm pleased to inform you that we have initiated a relationship with a local area organization which will be receiving all food left over from our events for distribution to individuals in need.

Your Board is as usual, working behind the scenes to bring you holiday cheer to last the whole year through.   In 2011, the activities we have planned include more social networking opportunities and training events in addition to rolling out the media relations bureau.  For planning purposes, please note that our next networking social at Gordon Biersch (900 F St.) is planned for January 20, 2011.  Our next training program (Financial Statements and Tax Returns) is scheduled for January  31, 2011 and will be held at the Sumner School.

We will be closing down our member survey shortly, and invite you to take a few moments to let us know your thoughts if you haven't already.  We are using this information to develop a data base for the revamped speakers' and media relations bureau.  It will also help us determine future programming at the Chapter and National levels.http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CKTD6F6

The ACFE has opened registration for the 2011 National Fraud Conference, being held in Southern California June 12-17, 2011.  Doesn't that location sound really good right about now?   Also, you should know that ACFE has totally redesigned the CFE prep course for 2011.  We are still holding open our Group Purchase opportunity, so if you are interested please let an officer know.

Please enjoy your holidays.  We look forward to seeing all of you in 2011!

With warm regards,

Cheryl Hyder, Greg Paige, Dave Karakashian, Ghaz Shah - your officers

President's Pen, September 2010

Hello Chapter Members and Prospective Members,

We hosted our first networking social of the year last month, at Gordon Biersch (900 F Street).  Based on attendee response, we judge it as a success. We look forward to future opportunities to meet and mingle with our members, and are working on setting up another networking social for October in lieu of a training event.

We are pleased to report that we have established a relationship with a shelter in the DC area, through which we will be donating the food left over from our trainings.   We invite you to bring canned goods to our training events, to donate to the shelter as well.

We are very excited to be enhancing our Speakers' Bureau, which currently manages requests from law enforcement, professional associations, and other organizations for professionals skilled and knowledgable subject matter experts to speak on certain topics.  Our new effort, tentatively titled a "Media Contact Center", is currently being formed and will be designed to accomodate requests for interviews from the local (and national) press located here in the Metro-DC area.

The cornerstone of this effort is the information and feedback we receive from you, and as a result would ask that you complete the brief survey we'll be sending out in the next week or so.  It's purpose is to help us learn more about our members and how their interests and experience will fit in with requests we receive, and we assure you that your personal information will NOT be provided to any outside organizations.

We are also trying to also help our non-certified members who are interested, to get certified.  We tried to accumulate sufficient interest to enable us to offer, on behalf of the ACFE, a discount on the electronic CFE Prep Course.  There apparently was some confusion about the discount, due to the timing of the ACFE's live review course.  As a result, we'll extend the opportunity for a group purchase / discount until September 30.  If you are a member of the chapter and are interested in purchasing the ACFE's electronic CFE prep/review course, please e-mail me at cheryl.hyder@acfedc.org with "CFE Prep Course" in the subject line.  I will assess the aggregate interest and respond to all within a week thereafter.

Finally, we do appreciate your support of the Metro-DC Chapter of the ACFE.  We do want to remind you that we are a purely volunteer run,  not for profit organization, and our strength comes from our members' contributions of time. If you are interested in volunteering on behalf of the chapter, even on an ad-hoc basis, please contact one of our officers.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event!

With warm regards,

Cheryl B. Hyder

President's Pen (August 2010)

posted Aug 20, 2010 6:07 PM by Unknown user

Last month, our chapter hosted the ACFE's 21st National Fraud Conference and Exhibition, which was held at the National Harbor's conference center. Those of you who were in attendance realize the tremendous value attributed to the opportunities to network with your peers and vendors, in addition to the educational value of the general and breakout sessions. Several of our Chapter's program leaders were recognized by ACFE as providing thought leadership in their particular niche areas, and spoke at the Conference.

We also met as a full Board in July, and started working on an aggressive agenda for the year, one that envisions an expanded speakers' bureau and enhanced professional development and outreach initiatives. Each of these initiatives will be announced publicly as soon as we have the necessary structure in place to fully support the efforts.
Like the National Conference, we hope to also provide our members and others interested in fraud prevention and detection, with opportunities to network with like minded professionals. We build this time into our training events, and also host networking socials from time to time. Our last networking event, held August 19, at Gordon Biersch (900 F Street), was a success. We look forward to future opportunities in which to meet our membership!

We are a volunteer run not for profit organization, and our strength comes from our members' contributions of time. If you are interested in volunteering on behalf of the chapter, please contact one of our officers.

Thank you again for your interest and support of the Metro-DC Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. We look forward to seeing you later this month.

With warm regards,

Cheryl B. Hyder
