4:00 – 5:00 PM ET - Session 2: Cybersecurity Risk Management Governance: An Agency Theory Perspective

CMMI in the AI Age: Driving Efficiency, Innovation, and Governance

Presenter: Jayakumar Sundaram

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) complements AI-driven advancements by embedding foundational practices that enhance transparency and accountability, crucial for sustained growth and organizational resilience against various threats. Jayakumar Sundaram will discuss how the CMMI offers a structured approach for organizations to manage and enhance their capabilities, especially when integrating artificial intelligence (AI). Jayakumar will elaborate CMMI's critical role in establishing robust governance, ensuring data integrity, and strengthening internal controls to mitigate operational and security risks, including those that could lead to unauthorized activities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate how the CMMI framework integrates with AI to enhance organizational capabilities and strengthen internal controls against potential operational and financial vulnerabilities.
  • Identify specific CMMI practice areas, such as Risk Management, Data Management, and Security Development, that are critical for mitigating risks and deterring unethical or fraudulent activities within an AI-driven environment.
  • Explain how CMMI's ongoing evolution addresses modern challenges by enhancing governance, data quality, and cybersecurity measures, contributing to a more resilient and fraud-resistant organizational landscape.

Cybersecurity Risk Management Governance: An Agency Theory Perspective

Presenter: Gerald Burch, Jordan Burch, and Mike McGarry

In this session, Gerald Burch, Jordan Burch and Mike McGarry will explores how the updated NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 elevates governance, providing a critical lens through agency theory to enhance cybersecurity risk management. They will examine how conflicts of interest and misaligned motivations among organizational agents can introduce vulnerabilities and increase the potential for illicit activities. Understanding these dynamics is key to designing robust governance structures and controls that deter misconduct and protect organizational assets.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze how agency theory principles, including potential conflicts of interest and hidden actions, can impact cybersecurity risk management governance.
  • Evaluate the application of NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0's governance function in identifying and mitigating organizational vulnerabilities that could be exploited for fraudulent purposes.
  • Design strategies for establishing robust cybersecurity governance structures, including clear roles, policies, and oversight mechanisms, to enhance accountability and deter misconduct across an enterprise.
